What is your favourite thing to do? Eat?  Read?  Cook?  Bake? Look at art? Study design? Learn new things?  Well if these are all things you like, then maybe it’s time you were introduced to some amazing food publications, which are currently hanging out and looking cool at Magic Pony. Here’s the 411 on some of these publications.

Lucky Peach is a quarterly journal of food and writing. Each issue focuses on a single theme, and explores that theme through essays, art, photography, and recipes.  At Magic Pony, we are carrying the two most recent issues, The Street Food Issue and All You Can Eat.  Lucky Peach is fun, clever, nerdy, adventurous, witty, and rich in content.  The magazine was created by David Chang, the chef and owner of Momofuku.  He and the magazine have taken home many James Beard Awards, which is the highest honour for food and beverage professionals working in North America.  So you can trust this guy… He knows what’s going on in the world of food, big time!  Here’s a look at Issue 10 and 11, respectively!

The Gourmand is an award winning biannual contemporary food, arts, and culture journal that was started in London in 2011. It brings together inspirational words, images, and ideas revolving around the universal subject of food.  The journal was founded in London by David Lane and Marina Tweed, who are actually an item <3.  Neither David or Marina are chefs or restaurateurs.  David’s background is design while Marina’s is managing projects for restaurants.  The couple met at a deli and the rest is history!   The main belief behind the magazine is that food is a common ground shared by the whole world and is thus a unique platform for communication.  As a result, The Gourmand is more focused on design, creativity, and the crossroads between culinary and creative industries.  The Gourmand offers a unique perspective and is a really beautiful publication.  We are carrying  Issue 3 and Issue 4 and here’s a peak at both!

Toilet Paper is a picture-based magazine that was founded in 2010 by the famous artist Maurizio Cattelan and photographer Pierpaolo Ferrari.  It is not primarily a food-related publication, but it tends to use food as one of it’s main subjects.  Toilet Paper combines slick photography with twisted narrative stories to make comments on production values of commercial photography. Looking at an issue of Toilet Paper is like jumping into another world because it is such an original journal.  We currently have in stock Toilet Paper Issue 9 and  1968: Radical Italian Furniture, which is another project between Cattelan and Ferrari in collaboration with the Deste Foundation in Athens, offering an unorthodox kaleidoscopic walk through the Dakis Joannou collection of Italian Radical Design furniture.  Below are some photos from Toilet Paper Issue 9.

Eating at Hotel Il Pellicano, just like Toilet Paper, is a very colourful!  It is a very special cookbook because it is also an art book.  If you are a foodie, this is the kind of book that you want on your coffee table. This book highlights the extravagantly elegant food from the celebrated Hotel Il Pellicano in Tuscany.  Hotel Il Pellicano has become known as one of the hippest (and most beautiful) destinations in the world because it is a hangout for the design, fashion and art worlds.  Juergen Teller is known for his fashion photography, but in this book, he gets to use the 2 Michelin Star menu of chef Antonio Guida as his subject and the result is fascinating! The complexity and originality of the food is photographed so beautifully and even the graphic design and layout of the book is a work of art. See for yourself!
