On Saturday October 27, 2012 Magic Pony aka the Sparkle Cats hosted the ROOKIE Yearbook One Halloween Book Launch & Dance Party. Tavi Gevinson, the visionary behind ROOKIE flew into Toronto for the occasion while her Toronto based pal and photo collaborator Petra Collins curated an amazing exhibition of artwork for the gallery showing work by fellow Rookie contributors Sonja Ahlers, Minna Gilligan, Beth Hoecel and Petra herself. Magic Pony’s Kristin Weckworth also created a pink bed of Rookie inspiration for the front window installation combining artwork by Petra Collins, Ginette Lapalme, and Allyson Mitchell along with found treasures from Magic Pony and Kristin’s personal collection.

Everyone showed up in the greatest costumes and while Tavi signed books, guests were treated to delicious snacks and candy including eyeball cupcakes and cookies, brain candy, pink chocolates, a graveyard of pudding and apple cider. All the refreshments were prepared by the Magic Pony Treat Team - Inez, Tyler and Tess. After the signing Magic Pony was transformed into a Halloween Dance party and under flower garland and lavender lights, Rooks danced the night away to the sweet sounds of DJs Prince Innocence. We only stopped dancing long enough to have Petra and Tavi, dressed as the Grady Twins (The Shining) cut and share the magic mountain glitter cake made by Magic Pony’s resident baker, Diana. This was a night of pure Magic, glitter, sparkles, love and new friendships. We are so happy to have been a part of this and thank you to all the amazing people who made this night so special. Lots of love and thank you’s especially to the Magic Pony team, Noel Middleton, Peggy and Julia from Drawn and Quarterly, Claire from Raincoast Books, DJs Prince Innocence, Petra Collins and Tavi!

We have been fans of Tavi Gevinson’s since Sonja Ahlers first introduced us to the StyleRookie blog and have followed ROOKIE loyally since it’s beginnings. Rookie magazine is literally the best thing ever! Seriously inspiring, honest and hilarious with amazing writing, photography, fashion and music coverage, we wish something like this existed when we were teenagers and still learn so much from it as adults. Check it out here and in the Magic Pony shop.
