Artist prints are a wonderful way of bringing your favourite pieces of artwork into your own home. Printmaking is a very ancient practice. The first record of printmaking was in Mesopotamia; round seals were used to make markings in clay tablets. Can you believe that was before 3000 BCE? Printmaking has undergone a lot of different processes since then and is still widely celebrated today. From woodblocks, etchings, screen printing to digital press and 3D printing, it’s a beautiful way to express the meaning of a piece.

At Magic Pony, we have a variety of artists who create prints and posters with a wide range of processes. Here’s a quick highlight:

Jamiyla Lowe’s intricate line work is showcased in this Bike Gang Glow-in-the-Dark Silkscreen print. Silk screening is where ink is pushed through a stencil against the paper. Lowe has used only five colours including subtle glow-in-the-dark paint; it creates an element of dark humor in this piece.

Alicia Nauta’s Offering to Mt. Pleasant is a beautiful, red risograph print. Risograph printers were released in Japan in 1986. The system is similar to a photocopier but, the inside of the machine is completely different! One colour is printed at a time which creates beautifully layered effects.
