Last October when we visited Japan, we began to notice a new cute girl character popping up in capsule machines. This girl turned out be Fuchiko on the Cup and she is a miniature OL (Office Lady) that you can hang off the edge of a cup, or any ledge in a variety of poses. She is usually seen in typical blue OL  work uniform, but in rare occasions you may find her in a bikini. This cute and bizarre character immediately caught our attention and after purchasing our first Fuchiko and placing her on our the edge of a cup, we were charmed. We’ve been actively following the evolution of Fuchiko and are excited to now be carrying Fuchiko on the Cup mini figures along with drinking glasses, mugs and an amazing set of postcards featuring photographs of Fuchiko in fantastic landscapes.

Since their initial release in 2012, Fuchiko has been collected by millions, quickly growing to become one of the most popular and collectible figures in Japan, not to mention an internet phenomenon. Returning to Japan in spring 2014, we found signs of Fuchiko everywhere! She’s even doing movies now. Created by the manga artist Katsuki Tanaka in collaboration with toy maker Kitan Club , she is referred to in Japan as ‘Cup’s Fuchiko-san’ or ‘Cup no Fuchiko’.

It’s hard to explain what makes Fuchiko so delightful. Maybe it’s the unexpected way she hangs out on the edge of a cup, reminding us not to take things too seriously. Maybe it’s her cool and casual attitude, and her unapologetic resting poses that put us at ease. People in Japan say they love the adorable way she looks and her funny poses, and that she heals their fatigue and soothes them. There certainly a universal magic about her.
