Did you know that July 16th is celebrated as World Snake Day?  In case you don’t understand Parseltongue, this means that there is a day each year where wildlife enthusiasts and the general public can celebrate and learn more about these fascinating creatures!  Although this holiday is relatively obscure and doesn’t really warrant fireworks, we still think it’s worth celebrating because snakes are beautiful, interesting, and often misunderstood.

Throughout history, snakes have made many important appearances in religion and mythology, making them one of the oldest and most widespread mythological symbols ever.  Symbolic values commonly associated to snakes are fertility and rebirth, guardianship, poison and medicine, and lastly, vengefulness and vindictiveness.  As you can see, snakes represent dual expression of good and evil, which explains why they might have such a confusing reputation.

World Snake Day is meant to clear up the confusion and fear over this sometimes dangerous but mostly misinterpreted reptile, and focus on the good representations of them throughout history. Only 1/4 of all snakes are venomous, and all of them would much rather avoid human contact if they could. So… keep the peace by letting snakes groove in their own habitat and re-think how you feel about nature’s pal, the snake!

Some of our favourite Magic Pony designers and artists use snakes for inspiration and imagery in their work and we’d like to highlight some of our favourite snake-charming stuff we’ve got in store!
