If you have ever wanted to try screen-printing, but don’t know where to begin, why not attend a workshop at the Art Gallery of Ontario this summer? The AGO is hosting a series of 4 week-long screen-printing workshops taught by four artists from Magic Pony and Narwhal Art Projects. The instructors, Alicia Nauta, Andrew Bailey, Michael Comeau, and Alexandra McKenzie, are all accomplished artists who have worked extensively in print. These are open and creatively-driven workshops that are available to beginners and pros of all ages.
Participants will learn about different screen-printing techniques, like creating multi-layer prints, mixing inks, and making gradients on a single layer, which is called a split fountain blend. Screen-printing is a very physical, but rewarding process of printing, in which you essentially push inks through stencils on wire mesh. It is a versatile medium that can be applied to any surface. Students are encouraged to bring extra paper, t-shirts, bags, and other materials they would like to print on.
The price of the 4 week workshop covers the cost of materials. Students will gain invaluable experience and knowledge from expert teachers that are directly involved in printed media. In the classes, they discuss the variances of printing techniques, contemporary screen-printers who are at the forefront of their media, the small press and do-it-yourself culture that surrounds screen-printing, and even how to easily set up a home studio.
The AGO is located at 317 Dundas Street West, in downtown Toronto. The workshops last all summer, and each begins on a different date.
